Alajuela Down Town
We will drive you to down town Alajuela and show you the best this beautiful relaxed and friendly city has to offer. First of all, we will walk around the pleasant central park where you will be able to admire the beautiful grounds and the unique red-domed cathedral. You will also see retired men sitting under mango trees and giving (not always flattering) nicknames to passersby. Concerts are given in the park’s bandstand on Sunday mornings. Next you will visit a small museum that is housed in a former colonial prison and has been dedicated to the hero Juan SantamarĂa who lost his life during the battle of Rivas in 1856, fighting against the invading mercenaries led by American William Walker . The Mercado Municipal is worth a visit and provides ample opportunities for shopping and to savour an authentic Costa Rican meal. Alajuela is Costa Rica ‘s second largest city but still has a country town attitude National Geographic has written that the Alajuela area enjoys one of the best climates in the world. and was once also known as the Mango capital of the world.
